Decanter World Wine Awards: 155 prizes for Germany

Germany's winemakers achieved some 150 medals and five recommendations at this year's renowned Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA). These are held annually in London and are one of the largest and most influential wine competitions worldwide.

 


The "Best in Show" award went to the Winning winery (Pfalz) for a Riesling 2017 GG from the site "Ungeheuer". It was rated 97 points (out of 100 possible).

Platinum was awarded to three German wines:

  • Weingut Dr. Loosen (Mosel) Ürziger Würzgarten Alte Reben Réserve Riesling GG 2012 (97 Punkte)
  • Weingut Meyer-Näkel (Ahr) Pfarrwingert Spätburgunder GG 2016 (97 Punkte)
  • Schloss Johannisberg (Rheingau) Blaulack Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2017 (98 Punkte).

Nine German wines reached gold, including three wines from the winery Hans Wirsching (Franconia):

  • Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg Riesling GG 2016 Riesling Beerenauslese 2016 und Silvaner GG 2016

The other six gold medalists come from the

  • Weingut Balthasar Ress (Rheingau) Hattenheim Nussbrunnen Riesling GG 2017
  • Kloster Eberbach (Rheingau) Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Spätburgunder GG 2016
  • Weingut Martin Waßmer (Baden) Dottinger Castellberg Pinot Noir GC 2015
  • Weingut Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof (Mosel) Layet Grosse Lage Riesling GG 2017
  • Schloss Johannisberg (Rheingau) Silberlack Riesling GG 2017
  • Schloss Proschwitz (Sachsen) Kloster Heilig Kreuz Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2016

103 German positions won a silver medal at DWWA, 34 wines a bronze medal and five wines a recommendation of the jury.
